The Joy of Line Dancing

See this content in the original post

I’ll admit, I am not the slightest bit trendy. I’m too focused on my own goals to give much thought to what other people are doing. However, I do find pop culture phenomena entertaining enough that I’ll occasionally check in on podcasts like It’s a Thing to find out what’s currently capturing people’s attention. Earlier this month, the hosts of It’s a Thing discussed how line dancing is once again having a moment.

The hosts started by slightly mocking the trend, but they ended feeling favorable towards it. As they note in the clip linked above, line dancing brings people together through a shared experience (social), and the dances are usually simple enough that newcomers can pick up the moves before the end of the song. Mastering the moves can help boost your esteem needs. However, the hosts also mention the joyous, playful nature of the experience often means that newcomers can make mistakes without feeling like idiots (safety). While the moves are generally simple, they are sometimes challenging enough that your growth needs are stimulated. Finally, the heart rate-raising activity and the resulting flush of endorphins help with your physiological needs.

How can you get in on this trend? Look for in-person classes at your local community center or Country Western bar/dance hall or practice with YouTube, such as with the instruction above.

Do you do line dancing? If so, which is your favorite dance and what tips can you share?
